ABOUT
Jess Weko is a professional artist working out of her studio in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Her artwork is a beautiful fusion of botanical art, sacred geometry, and crystal healing. Each piece is created by pressing flowers using a wood press over the course of weeks, trimming the dried flowers from the stems, and delicately arranging the pressed flowers into sacred geometric patterns and mandalas. Sacred geometry explores the mathematical and geometric patterns found in nature, spirituality, and the universe.
Incorporating crystals and gemstones into the artwork adds another layer of symbolism and energy. Crystals and gemstones are believed to possess unique energetic properties that can influence emotions, thoughts, and well-being. Jess believes that by integrating them into the compositions, a harmonious blend of natural elements is created that enhances the overall aesthetic and spiritual significance of her artwork.
Jess’ work offers viewers a visual and spiritual journey that invites contemplation, reflection, and connection with the natural world and higher realms of consciousness.
FAQs
How are the artworks made?
Each of my artworks is the result of an intricate, labor-intensive process that demands precision, patience, and time. I begin by carefully selecting delicate statice or rice flowers, which I press over several weeks using a meticulous method. Every other day, I open the press to replace the absorbent paper, preventing mold and preserving the flowers’ delicate structure—a task that alone can take hours. Once fully pressed, I painstakingly trim each flower by hand, removing the stems so that only the most refined, intact blooms remain. This level of detail and craftsmanship ensures that every piece is a one-of-a-kind, high-value work of art.
Each piece is meticulously crafted through a precise layering process, where I arrange pressed flowers into intricate mandala or sacred geometric patterns. I carefully balance the organic shapes and natural hues of the flowers to create a harmonious composition. To enhance depth and energy, I incorporate crystals and gemstones, thoughtfully placing each element to complement the design. This process requires immense patience and intention, ensuring that every artwork showcases the delicate beauty and essence of its materials.
Once the arrangement is finalized, I employ a specialized display method that both preserves the artwork’s delicate nature and enhances its dimensional depth. This technique gives the piece an ethereal presence, allowing light to interact with its fine details. The final presentation is a refined and elegant composition that honors the natural beauty of the flowers, evoking a sense of tranquility and a deep connection to the intricate patterns found in nature.
How did you come up with this idea?
The idea came to me in 2022 while pressing flowers, unsure of how to transform them into something truly unique. With a deep passion for craftsmanship and botanicals, I knew I didn’t want to create the typical pressed flower art that had become so ubiquitous. One day, as I sat in contemplation, my eyes landed on a large mandala medallion hanging on my wall. In that moment of reflection, inspiration struck—I realized I could fuse my love for florals with the intricate symmetry of mandalas. This approach not only allowed me to carve out a distinct artistic path but also pushed my creative limits, testing my patience and resilience. As someone who seeks deeper meaning in everything I do, this work has become a way to merge my love for design, nature, and my spiritual connection with the divine.
